Diamond Certification

A diamond certificate gives you a full detailed description of the diamond(s) you are buying. It gives the buyer a guarantee of the quality of diamond they are buying.

In 1975, the World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB) and the International Diamond Manufacturers Association (IDMA) appointed a joint committee to create an international standard for rules, working methods and nomenclature. The results were that in 1976, a comprehensive system of rules and methods was built up, combining the experience of professional diamond people with scientific facts and figures. That joint committee is now the International Diamond Council (IDC) which, in 1978, presented the result of their efforts at the world congress of WFDB and IDMA: the International Rules for Grading Polished diamonds.

At Design My Diamond, we use all major diamond certifying bodies, and we give our customers an option to choose the one they are happy with. Here we explain the different certifying bodies that are used by us.

DMD Certification

This is our own certificate and the diamonds are certified by our in-house experts.

We use very high standards that can be compared with international laboratories. This way we save the cost of certification from other bodies and thus pass on the same savings to our customers.

SGL

Solitaire Gemmological Laboratories Ltd (SGL) is an independent international gem testing laboratory. Trusted by jewellers and consumers alike, SGL certifications represent the highest standard of reliability, consistency and integrity. With their commitment to high certification standards, they serve the interests of the gems and jewellery industry and support gemmological research worldwide through their centre in London.

EGL

European Gemmological Laboratory (EGL) certificates are recognized around the globe for their accuracy and integrity, defining industry standards in evaluation and appraisal.

The company maintains a worldwide presence in the major diamond trading centres, co-operates with leading organisations including the World Federation of Diamond Bourses and runs an extensive educational program as part of its dedication to protecting public interest and raising the level of professionalism in the field.

IGI

International Gemmological Institute (IGI) is the largest organization of its kind, with offices in Antwerp, New York, Hong Kong, Mumbai, Bangkok, Tokyo, Dubai, Tel Aviv, Cavalese, Toronto, Los Angeles, Kolkata, New Delhi, Thrissur, Surat, Chennai and Shanghai .

HRD

Hoge Raad voor Diamant (the Diamond High Council) is a non-profit organization at the service of the Belgian diamond trade and industry. The HRD Certificates Department was founded in 1976 to meet the growing demand for reliable diamond certificates. The department has since grown into one of the largest diamond certification labs in the world and enjoys an excellent reputation for objectivity and quality. There, each diamond is examined independently by several experts with very sophisticated machinery, such as spectrophotometers, Dia-Mention systems, cathode luminescence apparatus, etc. to ensure a high level of reliability.

GIA

Gemological Institute of America (GIA) was established in 1931 as a non-profit educational resource for the gem and jewellery industry. Their aim is to provide the industry and the public at large with an independent, objective opinion regarding the quality of diamonds. As an unbiased arbitrator of standards in diamond grading they have secured the public’s trust. Each stone submitted for certification is carefully checked by numerous professionals to ensure maximum accuracy and grading consistency for client protection.

GIA developed the first internationally accepted Diamond Grading System with unbiased opinions of the quality of polished diamonds by applying a uniform criteria to their grading. It also introduced the foremost diamond report in setting the standard for diamond quality documentation around the world.
